We Conduct Comprehensive Reference Checks

Validating a candidate’s employment history is a vital part of the placement process, so we at Sustainable Placements always ensure that we carry out comprehensive reference checks in order to confirm a candidate’s employment history. Many employers skip this step, taking the candidates application on face value. However, rushing through the placement process and neglecting to run a comprehensive reference check and background screening can cause unnecessary problems at a later stage.

A savvy business owner will always test certain skills before hiring, this much we know. This is the boss’s way of checking that the candidate has the appropriate skills to complete the tasks required. For example, if the owner of a design company is looking to hire a new designer and the candidate can’t even turn on the computer then the cool and calculating business owner will know that something is up; their CV has been fabricated! Business owners are great at this, after all that’s why they are company owners. However, when it comes to an employee’s past there is no hard-and-fast, then-and-there test. More often than not the employer will simply take the employee’s word for it and without conducting a reference check and then, somewhat blindly, hire the individual.

So, what happens when an employee gets hired without them having the necessary qualifications or experience required for the position? As you can see this is a recipe for disaster and it doesn’t take an expert to work out that this whole situation isn’t going to end well. First of all the employee is under pressure because they can’t meet the demands. This results in poor performance which in turn angers the employer, and after a couple of weeks or months the employer may one day blow his or her lid and fire the individual. Every employer knows that an unfair dismissal means hearing after hearing with a disgruntled CCMA commissioner and a despondent, but slightly arrogant, ex-employee. It can be an extremely messy business which results in a loss of productivity and revenue generation for the employer, in addition to being a complete waste of time.

At Sustainable Placements we understand that you, as an employer, do not have the necessary amount of time to conduct reference checks on all of your potential employees. That’s why we’ll take care of this part of the process for you. We validate a candidate’s employment history and decipher which candidates are truthful and trustworthy, and which candidates are chancers trying to weasel their way into your company. We run comprehensive reference checks and background screening to ensure that you receive honest candidates and worthy contributors who will help build your business instead of freeloading off your success.

Reference checks can be a cumbersome business because of all the legality attached to digging into a candidate’s past. According to section 14 of the South African Constitution everyone has the right to privacy, so you can see why conducting a reference check may be problematic. An employer may argue that seeing as the business belongs to them an employee’s performance is not private, which is a valid point. However, an employee’s employment history is technically none of potential employers business and as a result is a private matter. There are a number of boxes which need to be ticked before a reference check can be conducted:

  • The applicant must give their consent to a reference check
  • The information must be truthful
  • The referee must show interest in giving information
  • The employer must show interest in receiving information

Obviously as an employer who already has a lot on their plate this process becomes an avenue of administration which the business owner simply does not have time for. Sustainable Placements will handle all the legality regarding reference checks and provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision when hiring.

Ensure that your work force is comprised of honest, qualified and experienced individuals who will help build your company towards the future. Take the stress out of hiring when you incorporate the services of Sustainable Placements when looking to fill a vacancy in your business.
